What To Expect From Your First Prenatal Obstetrics Appointment

Posted on: 7 April 2022

What will happen at your first obstetrics appointment? You recently found out that you're pregnant. Now that you've researched OBGYNs and chosen an obstetrician who you feel comfortable with, it's time to schedule your first visit. Take a look at what you can expect from this prenatal appointment.

When Is Your First Prenatal Appointment?

Your pregnancy test has two pink lines, a smiley face, or a little plus sign. Should you rush into the doctor's office today? The answer to this question depends on a few factors. These include your conception date, age, overall health status, and any pre-existing conditions that could impact a healthy pregnancy. This means you should call your OB as soon as you know that you are pregnant. Your doctor will schedule an appointment based on your individual needs.

What Information Will the OB Need?

Is this your first appointment with a new doctor? If you're already an established patient with a gynecology practice, you won't need to provide the OB with a health or family history. This information is already in your record. But you will need to give the doctor pregnancy-specific details. These include the date of your last menstrual period, whether you were using birth control when you conceived, a family history of pregnancy-induced conditions (such as preeclampsia or gestational diabetes), or any concerns that you may have about this pregnancy.

New patients will need to review their full health history with the OB. Essential information that the doctor will need to help you stay healthy during your pregnancy includes pre-existing medical conditions/family medical history (such as high blood pressure or diabetes), mental health issues (such as anxiety, bipolar disorder, or depression), medications that you currently take (prescription, over the counter, and natural supplements/vitamins), lifestyle factors (such as smoking, alcohol consumption, drug use, diet, and physical activity), your vaccination record, and the date of your last menstrual period.

Will You Need An Exam?

Yes, the doctor will examine you during your first prenatal checkup. This includes vitals (such as heart rate and blood pressure), height/weight, a pelvic exam, and a Pap smear. The first prenatal checkup may remind you of your annual gynecological exam. Like this type of yearly examination, the first prenatal visit is a painless appointment. You may also need an ultrasound to confirm the pregnancy, check for some types of pregnancy-related issues/concerns, or confirm a due date.

Will the Doctor Prescribe Medication During the First Appointment?

The OB may prescribe or recommend a prenatal vitamin during your first appointment. If you currently take prescription, over-the-counter, or natural/supplement medications, the obstetrician will review the potential risks (versus the benefits) and help you to decide which ones to continue during your pregnancy.

I know that as a woman, it's important that my daughters see a gynecologist for care. If you need guidance or information about OBGYN care, keep reading.
